How to Lose Weight

Ways to Exercise

There are so many ways to exercise that there really isn't any excuse not to find a way to include regular exercise in your life.

You should try to make it easy for yourself to exercise because it is important to maintain your exercise routine and make it a regular part of your life. Try to choose something you enjoy. If there really is no exercise that you enjoy then at least try to find something that is easy to fit into your life. There is no point joining a gym that is an hour's drive from your house because the drive will just become an excuse not to go. My solution was to join a gym near my office and go at lunchtimes. This fitted into my routine and made it easy for me to exercise. Everybody has their own routine but for sure, there is a way for you to fit exercise into your life.

Ways to Exercise

If you can't find a way to do one of the following then you are just not trying:

Take up a Sport:
Taking up a sport is a good way to start exercising. Many people enjoy sport and as well as being exercise, it can become a social event. There are so many different sports that you should be able to find something you enjoy -- football, basketball, tennis, badminton, squash, table tennis, golf, martial arts, the list is endless. Join a local team or a club or just take a friend to your local sports centre. You don't have to be good, sport is enjoyable at all standards.
Exercise Classes:
Some people like exercising with other people. The social side and the moral support helps keep up their enthusiasm. There are many exercise classes available at sports centers, parks and other venues. You could take up aerobics, dance, step, yoga or any of the other numerous exercise routines.
Gym:
Join a gymnasium or fitness centre. Gym workouts are a great way to get a high quality, all-round physical workout. You can do aerobic exercise on the cardio machines and anaerobic exercise on the resistance machines.
Walk:
Walking is exercise. It may not be vigorous exercise but it increases your heart rate and uses calories. Research has shown that a 30-minute walk, three times a week is enough to improve cardiovascular health and stave off heart disease. That does not mean that more vigorous exercise will not use more calories and give more health benefits but walking is still beneficial. You can walk around the park, walk to work, walk to the shops or get serious and do some long distance hiking.
Running:
This is a great way to burn calories and improve your cardiovascular system and it is so easy to do. Just put on your running shoes and go.
Cycling:
This is another excellent aerobic exercise. Okay, you will have to buy a bike but it is a good investment. You can get out and enjoy the countryside while exercising. Perhaps you can cycle to work or to the train station. I drove to the train station for five years. It took twenty minutes, cost money for fuel and parking and sometimes I would get stuck in traffic and miss my train. I couldn't believe it when I started cycling and found it only took 10 minutes, was free and stress free. Why didn't I think of it earlier?
Swimming:
This is a fabulous all round exercise. It uses all the major muscle groups, is a good aerobic workout, it has anaerobic benefits and it has the added benefit that it is very low impact so it is not putting any stress on the joints. Just being in the water uses calories as your body is working to maintain body temperature.
Play with the Kids:
Some people complain they do not have time for exercise between work and taking care of the children. That doesn't make sense -- kids love exercise, in fact kids are exercise. Take them to the park for a game, take them for a walk or take them swimming. It is good for them and you. You will get fit together and probably find you get more time to yourself in the evening because the kids are tired.
Workout at Home:
If you can't find time for anything else then why not exercise at home. There are many ways. You can do press-ups, sit-ups and many other free exercises. You could get an exercise video or buy some weights or an exercise machine. I must admit that I think exercising at home is the hardest regime to maintain. It is just so easy to ignore the exercise machine in the corner of the room and sit on the sofa.
Dancing:
Dancing is exercise and can be very energetic. If you don't like exercise maybe you enjoy dancing. You could try one of the classical dance forms like ballroom or ballet. Alternatively, just get down the disco and strut your stuff.
